2.Human Factors in the Design and Evaluation of Central Control Room Operations [Hardcover]

Book Description

Publication Date: November 18, 2009 | ISBN-10: 1439809917 | ISBN-13: 978-1439809914 | Edition: 1

Whether used for aviation, manufacturing, oil and gas extraction, energy distribution, nuclear or fossil fuel power generation, surveillance or security, all control rooms share two common features. The people operating them are often remote from the processes that they are monitoring and controlling and the operations work 24/7. The twin demands of remote and continuous operation place special considerations on the design of central control rooms. Human Factors in the Design and Evaluation of Central Control Room Operations provides an analysis of Human Factors and Ergonomics in this complex area and the implications for control room staff. This information contained within this book can then be used to design, assessed and evaluate control rooms.
Taking an integrated approach to Human Factors and Ergonomics in the control room environment, the book presents fourteen human factors topics: competencies, training, procedures, communications, workload, automation, supervision, shift patterns, control room layout, SCADA interfaces, alarms, control room environment, human error, and safety culture. Although there are many resources available on each of these topics, this book the information together under one cover with a focus on central control room operations. Each chapter is self-contained and can be read in any order, as the information is required.

"A damning history of the Chernobyl affair, from its origins in the plant's primitive design and careless management to the economic and political crisis the accident precipitated." —Clenn Garelik, New York Times Book Review
On the morning of April 26, 1986, a Soviet nuclear plant at Chernobyl (near Kiev) exploded, pouring radioactivity into the environment and setting off the worst disaster in the history of nuclear energy. Now a former Soviet scientist gives a comprehensive account of the catastrophe.

5.Process Control Case Histories: An Insightful and Humorous Perspective from the Control Room [Paperback]

Book Description

Publication Date: April 1, 2010 | ISBN-10: 1606501763 | ISBN-13: 978-1606501764

With a dose of humor to sweeten a serious message, noted control systems author Greg McMillan offers an experienced-based guide to what can so often go wrong with the systems that measure, regulate, and control industrial processes - from pH measurements to temperature and pressure monitors to process interlock problems. Using anecdotes, dialogue and dramatized skits, the book helps make more vivid the abstract concepts of how control systems actually do - or don't - work in real industrial settings.

6.The 2011-2016 World Outlook for Inspection, Quality Control, Tool Room, and Machinists' Precision Measuring Tools of Adjustable Size [Paperback]

Book Description

Publication Date: January 20, 2011

This econometric study covers the world outlook for inspection, quality control, tool room, and machinists' precision measuring tools of adjustable size across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-a-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for inspection, quality control, tool room, and machinists' precision measuring tools of adjustable size. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world's regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

8.Instrument Engineers' Handbook, Vol. 2: Process Control and Optimization, 4th Edition [Hardcover]

Book Description

Publication Date: September 29, 2005 | ISBN-10: 0849310814 | ISBN-13: 978-0849310812 | Edition: 4th

The latest update to Bela Liptak's acclaimed "bible" of instrument engineering is now available. Retaining the format that made the previous editions bestsellers in their own right, the fourth edition of Process Control and Optimization continues the tradition of providing quick and easy access to highly practical information. The authors are practicing engineers, not theoretical people from academia, and their from-the-trenches advice has been repeatedly tested in real-life applications. Expanded coverage includes descriptions of overseas manufacturer's products and concepts, model-based optimization in control theory, new major inventions and innovations in control valves, and a full chapter devoted to safety. With more than 2000 graphs, figures, and tables, this all-inclusive encyclopedic volume replaces an entire library with one authoritative reference. The fourth edition brings the content of the previous editions completely up to date, incorporates the developments of the last decade, and broadens the horizons of the work from an American to a global perspective.
