1.Sport, Physical Activity and the Law [Paperback]

Book Description

Publication Date: November 1, 2007 | ISBN-10: 1571675272 | ISBN-13: 978-1571675279 | Edition: 3rd Revised edition

How does a successful, caring and committed coach land in a court-room, facing charges of negligence and responsibility for the debilitating injuries suffered by one of her star athletes? This book examines this ever-increasing occurence in the field of nonprofessional sport and physical activity. The authors show sport administrators and coaches how to prevent legal problems through knowledge of law as it applies to sport and physical activity. The book is designed specifically as a textbook for sport law classes. Each chapter includes a list of learning objectives, an index of key terms, a summary of the concepts presented, review questions and suggested references. The case studies, based on actual situations are found throughout the book. They illustrate in clear language how the legal concepts discussed in each chapter are applied in the real world. At the end of each part is a section entitled "Canadian Applications". This has been contributed by Hilary A. Findlay, an attorney practicing in Edmonton Alberta, who also lectures on sport and the law at the University of Alberta, Canada.

2.Sports [Paperback]

Book Description

Publication Date: July 29, 2008

Poetry. SPORTS, the last of Kenneth Goldsmith's American trilogy (THE WEATHER, TRAFFIC, and SPORTS), is a complete radio transcription of the longest nine inning Major League Baseball game on record. As with the rest of the trilogy, Goldsmith's exact parsing of language is used to articulate an unfolding narrative. Nothing is left out: in SPORTS we hear every utterance and stumble of the announcers as well as each ad broadcast during the game. It is said that in a normal two and a half hour baseball game, approximately eight minutes of action occurs; this game--the New York Yankees vs. the Boston Red Sox from August of 2006--lasts nearly five hours, doubling the language, leaving the broadcasters a seeming eternity to fill with a parade of endless statistics and in-booth repartee. As the narrative grinds on and the hours pass, a claustrophobic sense of despair descends upon the booth. "Tomorrow?" asks one broadcaster. "I think we're all writing opuses for tomorrow."

Students can also use the guide’s dynamic and interactive learning activities to expand learning beyond a typical lab situation. Key concepts are reinforced as students conduct self-made experiments and record their own physiological responses to exercise. In addition, the study guide offers access links to scientific and professional journals as well as organization and career information.
One convenient web address gives instructors access to an updated instructor guide, presentation package, image bank, and test package. The presentation package includes PowerPoint slides with key points and content, which can be modified to suit a variety of class structures. The image bank features all of the graphics, artwork, and content photos from the text for easy insertion into tests, quizzes, handouts, and other course materials. 6.Sports [Hardcover]

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Sports is the latest collection of works by Leifer ( Sports! , LJ 9/15/78 ) , a 20-year veteran of sports photography. The most captivating shots are of amateur competitors, such as the eight-oared Olympic rowing team, Daley Thompson firing his javelin, and midshipmen and cadets lining up for their annual gridiron showdown. Also memorable are the closeups of sports legends: the serious stare of Bear Bryant, as seen through an acrylic chalkboard; the toothless smile of Terry Bradshaw; the playfully menacing profile of George Foreman. Leifer includes shots of many international events, like the Olympics and World Cup Soccer, but features on current stars such as Darryl Strawberry and Lawrence Taylor add little depth to an otherwise attractive volume. Recommended for larger sports and photography collections.

From the author of what has been called the best book on Olympic weightlifting, Olympic Weightlifting: A Complete Guide for Athletes & Coaches, comes Olympic Weightlifting for Sports. This book focuses on athletes and coaches outside of the competitive weightlifting world to present a method of teaching the Olympic lifts and their variants simply, safely and effectively to all types of athletes. Also includes information on program design and flexibility training to prepare athletes to perform the lifts.
"Coach Everett's Olympic Weightlifting for Sports is a extraordinary product for any sport coach s library. As a proponent of the power clean and its variations for performance training, I found this book to be an outstanding reference for teaching methodology for the Olympic Movements. Coach Everett provides user-friendly terminology for the explanations of these movements. This book is a must-have for any coach who implements Olympic lifts in their program.
Joe Kenn, Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, Carolina Panthers
"Coaches, make room on your bookshelf for Greg Everett's Olympic Weightlifting for Sports. Thorough, well written, well organized, and full of information & pictures to help make each point understandable. This will help make you a better coach, and in turn help improve your athletes potential to succeed. I'm excited for Greg and excited to put the information to use!
Jim Malone, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach, San Diego Padres
This is, by far, the most detailed and thorough book about Olympic weightlifting technique. Greg Everett has done an excellent job in presenting and organizing the material in this book. The photos are great. I strongly recommend that any strength coach or sports performance coach own this book if he/she is teaching deep squatting, snatch and clean pulls, and Olympic style lifts. It is well worth the money spent.
Ethan Reeve, Strength & Conditioning Coordinator, Wake Forest University
"Olympic Weightlifting for Sports is another outstanding book by Greg Everett that breaks down everything you need to know about the specifics of Olympic weightlifting. I really like the way Greg breaks down the progressions for each movement. I've always been a big believer in keeping things simple and specific for both coaches and athletes. This is a must-have for anyone trying to understand all aspects of Olympic lifting. All athletes need to understand why they are training a certain way. This book explicitly covers that for Olympic lifting."
Jeff Dillman, Director of Strength & Conditioning, University of Florida
This book is a great addition to any strength & conditioning coach s library. It gives very basic and descriptive instruction that does not complicate what a strength & conditioning coach has to teach and coach on a daily basis regarding Olympic style lifts.
Kevin Yoxall, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach, Auburn University
Greg Everett is my go-to resource when it comes to the Olympic lifts. Whether it s coaching, program design, or even addressing common limiting factors like flexibility, Olympic Weightlifting for Sports leaves no stone unturned. Whether you re a young coach learning the ropes or a grizzled veteran, this book is an amazing resource. Quite simply, if your goal is to teach athletes how to Olympic lift safely and effectively, this book needs to be in your library.
